Believe it or not, more tequila is sold in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world, including Mexico. And tequila companies have a barman named “Willie” and a little creation of his called the margarita to thank for it.
Since its alleged conception back in 1934, the margarita has gone through many flavor and texture transformations. Our obsession with this cocktail had turned it into a legendary libation and awarded it with its own holiday: National Margarita Day.
With such an ideal platform as National margarita Day, Tequila Avión, an up and coming tequila brand, is reintroducing itself to Los Angeles via the margarita bandwagon. But Avión is not just another bottle of tequila. It comes with bragging rights. Tequila Avión was deemed “an integral component to the World’s Greatest Margarita” at the 6th Annual Margarita Competition in late 2011.
So how good could a Tequila Avión margarita be? You can find out for yourself. Several restaurants are offering exciting variations of the traditional margarita using Tequila Avión: Avión Grapefruit Jalapeno Margarita (available at The Montage Hotel), Sange de Avión (available at Dini’s Distro), the Frozen Margarita (available at Dogz Long Beach), and the Ultimate Margarita (available at Alfonsos).
And if you want to make one yourself, Vendome Liquors has it on the shelves for about $50..
