Early reports indicate that a male student opened fire, killing a staff member who was attempting to shield students from gun shots before turning the gun on himself.
During a press briefing, the Sparks, Nevada Police Chief confirmed that two people are dead, including the 13-14 year old student/shooter. Two other male students were transported to area hospitals. One student has already under gone surgery for shooting related injuries. The other student is said to be doing well.
According to Sparks Police officials, between 150 and 200 officers responded to the shooting, including SWAT team members.
Sparks Middle School students and the elementary school located next door were taken to the nearby Sparks High School, which served as the evacuation center and all classes have been canceled.
Law enforcement officials insist the city is safe, and there is no remaining threat at the Sparks Middle School after this morning's shooting.
Washoe County Emergency Manager, Aaron Kenneston said a 911 call about the shooting was received early Monday morning, at approximately 7.30 a.m.
Another press conference is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday.
