It was a tragic weekend at sea, as was first reported Saturday when a South Carolina man fell to his death from the atrium on board the Carnival 'Fantasy'. Today, Royal Caribbean reports that a 47 year old female passenger aboard 'Liberty of the Seas' died late Sunday night while at sea.
UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Barbara Wood, 47 from Middleborough, Massachusetts.
The death, currently under investigation by officials at Port Everglades, occurred while the ship was at sea, location unknown.
According to a Royal Caribbean spokesperson, the deceased woman apparently missed a step while descending a flight of stairs in a ship's nightclub and fell, hitting her head. She was treated by the ship's medical staff, but died an hour later.
Liberty was on a four night cruise that included a stop in Cozumel. The accident occurred late Sunday night, and the ship returned to Port Everglades at 5 a.m. Monday morning.
Various reports state that an alert was made on board between 1 and 2 Monday morning. Passengers reports had the accident happening in one of the ship's disco's, and they reported a lot of blood on the scene. The club was immediately shut down following the incident.
In addition to Royal Caribbean personnel, investigators with the Broward medical examiner and Sheriff's Office were on board the ship this morning.
