It's true that you can heat up pretty quickly by cross-country skiing and Devil's Thumb Ranch is a world-class Nordic facility so you know you will get hot.  But did you know about the other ways to heat up at the ranch? And I am not talking skiing!  Get your mind out of the snowbank people!  There are many ways to heat up on a frigid wintery Valentine's weekend in Colorado. Besides the xc-skiing, snowshoeing and ice-skating you can do at the ranch here are a few suggestions that will encourage you to make the 2 hour drive (or less) to Devil's Thumb for the weekend. And you don't even need to ski or move your gluteous maximus much to enjoy the following ideas.

  1. CABINS: There's the lodge which I mentioned in the previous article AND there are 'private' ridge top cabins with fireplaces, geothermally-heated floors and cushy European mattresses.

  2. RANCH CREEK SPA:  Spend the afternoon in the 'Couple's Suite that includes a living room with a fireplace, spacious treatment room and private restroom.  Get the 'Hot Stone" massage - heated river rocks glide over the body to induce relaxation and relieve muscle tension. Or try the 'Hot Towel' infused massage. (My favorite.) This sublime experience combines massage with hot steaming towels steeped in aromatic essences.  Mmmmm. Lavender and sage or eucalyptus or cinnamon and orange.

  3. SWIMMING POOL:  Meander over to the Broad Axe Barn for a swim.  In winter you say?  Yes, cause the indoor/outdoor swimming pool, hot tubs and buildings are geothermally-heated.  Don't forget to visit the sauna too.

  4. SLEIGH-RIDE for 2:  Get all snuggly and breathe in that mountain air on a frosty horse-drawn sleigh ride. Layer up in comfy warm blankets while holding your hotty's hot hand.

  5. FIRED-UP:  Chill out at Heck's Tavern near the six-sided, floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a hot toddy to end the day with a "toast."

Of course there are more than 5 ways to heat things up at Devil's Thumb Ranch but the list just helps you get started!
