Anonymous hacktivists target Justin Bieber after the Canadian pop star appeared in public wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, the symbol of the international internet hacktivist collective known as Anonymous.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, Anonymous hacktivists announced “Operation Butthurt for Bieber” (#OpButthurtforBieber) via Facebook. The announcement comes after paparazzi caught Bieber clowning around while wearing a Guy Fawkes mask in New York Wednesday night. The following is an excerpt from that announcement:
Greetings citizens of the world we are Anonymous!
It has come to our attention that Justin Bieber has made mockery of anonymous we now unite and make it known to justin that anonymous are not to be taken lightly.
The announcement goes on to suggest that Anonymous enthusiasts flood Bieber’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts with messages of displeasure at the perceived slight.
Anonymous is often identified with the Guy Fawkes mask, first made famous in the motion picture “V for Vendetta.” The iconic Guy Fawkes mask Justin Bieber wore Wednesday night has come to represent a universal symbol of protest, an international symbol of hope and justice.
The Guy Fawkes mask is a celebrated Internet meme that is inextricable from the phenomenon that is Anonymous, the nebulous and notorious international internet hacktivist collective that fights for justice.
