Anonymous hacks the pro-Assad hacker group known as the Syrian Electronic Army, compromising servers and obtaining members’ names along with user IDs and passwords, as part of Operation Syria (#OpSyria).
According to a report issued Sept. 2 by The Register, an “entity or person associated with Anonymous” confirmed the successful attack against the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA). The report claims Anonymous “d0xed – that is, de-anonymised – ‘five core members’ of the SEA.”
The SEA emerged during the rise of anti-regime protests in Syria in the spring of 2011, and has been hacking social media accounts associated with major news organizations and human rights organizations ever since.
The SEA is thought to have been behind the recent attacks against the New York Times, Twitter and The Washington Post. In the past the group has used phishing attacks to take control of NPR.org and other national news organizations. The group successfully hacked the Associated Press' Twitter account in April and falsely tweeted that the White House was bombed and that President Obama was injured.
KrebsOnSecurity reports The SEA denied they were victims of a hack by Anonymous despite considerable evidence to the contrary “as gigabytes of data apparently seized during the compromise leaked onto the Deep Web this weekend.”
Anonymous issued a press release announcing Operation Syria (#OpSyria) earlier this week. The following is an excerpt from that announcement:
Silence is a war crime.
More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict in Syria.
For far too long, we have witnessed the barbaric, unjust and brutal treatment of the Syrian people.
Dictator Assad and elements within the Syrian Opposition, you now have the undivided attention of Anonymous.
To the people of Syria, know that Anonymous stands with you in this war against terror.
We vow to do everything we can to hinder war crimes played against you. We will raise awareness in every manner we can. We will assist you in putting an end to this carnage.
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not Forgive.
We do not Forget.
Dictator Assad, oppressors of the Syrian people, Expect US!
