Anonymous hacks Burger King's Twitter account to look like McDonalds

Around noon ET today, the Burger King Twitter account was hacked. Anonymous, a well-known group of hacktivists, were busy replacing Burger King’s logo and about section into the fast food company’s competition—McDonalds. They changed the default image along with the name to McDonalds. In addition to changing the appearance, Anonymous began tweeting racial and false claims about the company being sold.

Twitter has suspended Burger King’s account since the compromise. When the hackers took over the social media account, they were sending out messages saying the account was sold to McDonalds "because the whopper flopped." The hackers also wrote, “We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you @DFNCTSC.” The online hacktivist, Anonymous, did take the blame for the hack in a tweet. They mentioned a new operation called #OpMadCow.

For about an hour, the account was tweeting inappropriate messages and photos. One of the tweets said, “We caught one of our employees in the bathroom doing this….” That particular tweet included a photo of a man injecting a syringe into his arm. McDonald’s Twitter account did respond to the hack to let people know they had nothing to do with it.

At this time, it is not exactly clear what the hacker’s campaign intention was.
