Annual meeting of Texas State Rifle Association features top politicians

In Mesquite, Texas this weekend, the annual meeting of the Texas State Rifle Association featured both Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) as speakers as per the Dallas News Website. The recent issues of gun rights and gun legislation were at the forefront of the remarks made by the politicians.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has been very outspoken in recent weeks regarding the Second Amendment of the constitution. The Dallas News website reports that Attorney General Abbott stated “I will never, ever let anyone come to the state of Texas and take your guns away from you.”

In addition, Attorney General Greg Abbott criticized the tactics that are currently being used by President Barak Obama to affect new gun legislation. The Attorney General stated “He’s wrong to politicize the tragedy in Connecticut, he’s wrong to blame guns rather than criminals, and he’s wrong to push an agenda that is designed to score points but not designed to do anything to make the country safer.”

The Attorney General was joined by U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) who described the current gun control advocacy efforts as “political theater”. Senator Cornyn has also been outspoken regarding his defense of the Second Amendment.

Last summer, Sen. Cornyn joined 50 other U.S. senators in opposing the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty, highlighting that the provisions in the treaty specifically oppose the freedoms guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.

In the letter addressed to President Barak Obama and then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the senators state “our country’s sovereign and constitutional protection of individual freedoms must not be infringed.” At that time a consensus was unable to be reached among the members of the UN General Assembly. The issue will again be discussed at a conference at the UN next month.

The Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) was founded in 1919 with headquarters located in Austin. The TSRA also has a political action committee with the goal of “educating elected representatives, the media, and the public about issues relating to the freedoms guaranteed by the Second Amendment.”

In addition to the forum featuring Attorney General Greg Abbott and Sen. John Cornyn, a gun show was also part of the weekend’s festivities.
