Headlining this year’s event will be the Joey Ramone Tribute Band, which features Cheetah Chrome, Glen Matlock, Sick F****, George Tabb, and brother Mickey Leigh. Rounding out the line-up are Andy Shernoff, David Peel, The A-Bones, Heap, Gobstites, The Bully’s, and The Independents, who were managed by Joey. Closing the show will be Sean O’Sullivan’s Punk Pipers. John Holmstrom, Stig Stench, Monte Melnick, and Peter Aschner will all act as masters of ceremony.
The event has been held every year on Joey Ramone’s birthday since the singer’s death in 2001 from Lymphoma. According to joeyramone.com, the origin of the event was a promise his brother and mother, Charlotte Lesher, made to celebrate Joey’s 50th birthday, occurring one month after his passing. Joey would have been 63 this year.
Best known for songs like “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “I Wanna Be Sedated,” Joey Ramone, born Jeff Hyman, was one quarter of the influential punk band The Ramones. Together with Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin), Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), and Tommy Ramone (Thomas Erdelyi), the band from Forest Hills, New York brought a new kind of music to the masses almost forty years ago.
For the first time, a couple of social aspects have been added to the event this year. The official artwork for the show was designed by online contest winner Marie Laferriere. A contest is also being held for a New York based, undiscovered punk band to open the show.
Tickets for the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash are on sale now for $25. Proceeds from the event go to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.
