Annual event makes birthday wishes come true for kids in need

With so many families struggling to make ends meet right now, countless kids are forced to spend their birthdays without parties or even presents. In fact, one in six children in the U.S. lives in poverty. When a family can't even afford food or shelter, they certainly can't afford birthday gifts. Thankfully, Twin Cities non-profit Cheerful Givers has distributed over 329,000 birthday gift bags to Minnesota kids in need since 1994.

To raise money and awareness for the cause, Cheerful Givers will host the "Great Minnesota Birthday Party" at Mall of America on March 27th, which has been named "Cheerful Givers Day" throughout Minnesota. Stop by Sears Court from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for kids' activities, a cheering contest, prize drawings, an appearance by Miss Minnesota and entertainment by local performers including Tim Mahoney and Jeff James.

Though the event is free, donations are always needed to fill more birthday bags for kids in need. A $50 donation can provide gift bags for at least five kids. If you'd prefer to donate goods like gift bags, candy, ribbons or toys, email Cheerful Givers at
