Saturday, October 12th, El Monte Elementary School in Mt. Diablo Unified School District, held their annual Fall Fest from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Traditional events included the Halloween costume and pumpkin decorating contests. In addition, numerous carnival games were set up for everyone to enjoy. Besides the usual cotton candy, popcorn, and other snacks, pizza and Jamba Juice were added to the lunch menu. Although numbers are not official, it would be safe to say that there were well over 100 in attendance. A special thanks goes out to Jennifer Fitzgerald, PTA President, and Heather Brass, as co-chairs of the event.
Many El Monte staff members, as well as parents and students, were not only in attendance, but working the games and booths, including Jean Sabolevsky, and Kim Currey, both El Monte office staff. In fact, Kim was one of the grand prize winners for a night’s stay at the Hilton in San Francisco. A few of the other grand prize items included dinner at the San Francisco Hilton, and reserved parking spots on El Monte’s campus. Among the other raffle prizes were a Starbuck’s Coffee basket, Trader Joe’s basket, ½ Price Book gift baskets, Mary Kay basket, Sport’s Basement gift card, and various other items. El Monte’s own Toby Montez, interim principal, won a Peet’s Coffee basket.
Events such as these are truly a community endeavor. The strength of the community is evidenced by the growing attendance and involvement of subgroups within the community, which is visible at El Monte. Christina Boman, principal, was not able to be present as she just gave birth to her son Kai, and is on maternity leave. She was missed!
