"Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot... " is the beginning of a rhyme noting Guy Fawkes Day which was popular in Great Britain, however in recent years has spread globally. It regards November 5, 1605 when Gunpowder Plot member Guy Fawkes was arrested in a failed attempt to bomb the House of Lords. The modern day movement has gained strength and inspiration from the 2006 film V for Vendetta starring Natalie Portman. The movement Anonymous has promised a major shift to 'restart' the United States government on November 5, 2013 in what the group is calling its 'Million Mask March'. Tomorrow millions will physically protest the governments in their areas, including here in West Palm Beach and Lake Worth, Florida. The most comprehensive list of events can be seen here. Their mission statement reads, "To remind this world what it has forgotten, that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than just words." The protest will either be epic or be a dud.
Members of Anonymous have hacked into computers around the world working to right injustices. The group claims responsibility nearly each week for a serious Internet hacks. This morning it came to light that Anonymous Indonesia had hacked into 170 Australian websites over spy claims. Also this morning the group has waged war against the Singapore government. Anonymous is not a group, but a network of small groups with no one specifically in charge - it is a movement, not an organization. Their version of the Guy Fawkes rhyme goes like this:
REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER.
The Government's treason and plot.
I see no reason, why the Government's treason
should ever, be, forgot!
We are Anonymous
We are Legion
We do not Forgive
We do not Forget
Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.
