Anne Rice returns to writing horror fiction but not vampire novels

After an absence of almost ten years, Anne Rice is writing horror novels again. But sorry, “Twilight” and other vampire fiction fans; Rice’s latest horror novel is not about vampires. “The Wolf Gift”, published by Knof last week on Valentine’s Day, centers on werewolves.

Why Rice’s long absence from producing horror fiction? Once a lapse Catholic, she reconverted back to the religion. From the late ‘90s through the first decade of the new century Rice was writing about angels and Christianity. Strange for an author who is more known for writing about the Prince of Darkness’s (Dracula’s) race? Maybe it shouldn’t be: even the Bible contains stories that involve dark supernatural beings. Rice explains her compatibility between her faith and dark fiction in an essay which you can read at her official website.

Now Rice has converted back to horror fiction! “The Wolf Gift”, according to Random House’s website, involves werewolves in a modern high tech setting. The site also indicates that a werewolf curse is also a blessing (or gift, as the title states) in this novel. The story centers on a young man’s struggle to accept himself as both human and wolf while being harassed by the institutions that fear him as a monster. You can find out more about “The Wolf Gift” during Rice’s interview to be broadcasted Friday, Feb. 24,10 a.m. (PST) on the Authors@Google’s YouTube channel.

Even horror authors need to take a break from vampires, let alone the genre as a whole! But it’s great to have Anne Rice back as a writer of dark tales.
