When Anne Hathaway walked the Oscars red carpet looking all washed out in a pale pink Prada design with darts that accentuated her nipples, a lot of wardrobe watchers wondered how such a pretty gal could suffer such a horrible fashion fail. A Feb. 25 report by E! Online tries to explain Anne's reasoning -- she decided to ditch her original dress because it was too similar to the one donned by her “Les Misérables” costar Amanda Seyfried.
Anne Hathaway had originally chosen a Valentino gown, which isn't surprising -- she loves the designer so much that she asked him to create a custom-made wedding dress for her. When Anne arrived to the Oscars wearing Prada instead, there was a lot of speculation about why she suddenly dumped the designer for the unflattering Prada gown -- lots of fashion fans probably thought she and Valentino had a major falling out or that Anne had badly damaged the dress that she planned on wearing. After all, she is rather prone to wardrobe malfunctions. However, Anne had actually learned that Amanda Seyfried’s floral print Alexander McQueen gown was strikingly similar to the Valentino dress she planned on wearing. So Anne had to switch gowns just three hours before the Oscars.
It would be interesting to know what happened “behind the seams” here. Was Amanda a “mean girl” who bullied Anne into changing gowns so that she could keep hers? And was the Prada dress with the darts on the nipples the only option Anne could get her hands on at the last minute?
It’s likely that Amanda Seyfried was simply in a position where she couldn’t change into a different gown by the time Anne learned about the similar styles, and it’s also possible that Anne just decided to be nice by not asking Amanda to change her dress. Anne has been trying really hard to convince everyone that she’s America’s sweetheart by being overly gracious with her breathy acceptance speeches, so maybe she just saw dress-gate as another way to make herself look good.
Now that everyone has learned why Anne Hathaway had to switch to the nipple dress, the move really could work in her favor. Instead of being ridiculed for choosing the ill-fitting gown with unfortunate darts, Anne will be pitied for losing her look to Amanda Seyfried.
Anne probably craves a little pity right now -- she recently revealed that the “Hathahaters” do get to her, and she allegedly spent a lot of time practicing her Oscar acceptance speech in order to avoid being ridiculed again. However, she kind of lucked out since everyone was too busy staring at her nipples to even notice what she was saying.
