Annapolis police investigate first homicide of the year

Annapolis, Md. --- Police have arrested two men for the murder of an Anne Arundel County man, the city's first murder of 2013.

Police say the killing was reported in the 1900 block of Copeland Street around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers had responded for a report of a man down outside the apartment complex. That is where police found the victim, later identified as 30-year-old Howard Durley, suffering from an "apparent gunshot wound." He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrested for his murder are William Chase, 19, of Capital Heights and Charles Spriggs, 25, of Annapolis.

Police say detectives located and interviewed witnesses who provided information leading to the suspects. "The investigation has revealed that this was not a random act but apparently involves a relationship the victim had with a female," states an APD news release.

"This was an unfortunate and senseless crime," said APD Chief Michael Pristoop in the news release. "At the very least the community should understand that, although regrettable, this murder was not a random act but was targeted and purposeful. I am thankful for the thorough and quick work by our detectives and for the help provided by the State's Attorney's Office."
