Annapolis and Manassas experience first homicides of the year

Annapolis, known for its landmarks, the Naval Academy and being the capital of Maryland, had its first homicide on Aug. 10. The victim, Mark Alexander Cooper, 21, was found shot to death near a baseball field.

Mark Alexander Cooper of Glenarden was shot to death early Sunday morning near a baseball field in the 1100 block of Madison Street. The field is at the edge of the Harbour House and Eastport Terrace public housing communities.

Annapolis is located in Anne Arundel County. So far police have reported eight homicides this year. Glenarden is located in Prince Georges County. No arrests have been made in this incident.

Manassas is located in Prince William County in Northern Virginia. The city’s first homicide happened on Aug. 17.

Police have arrested six suspects in the killing of Cesar B. Contreras, which they believe is gang-related. The Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service also assisted in the arrest. Contreras was found rolled up in carpet and found near a dumpster.

Police said Mena Romero admitted to “kicking and punching the victim after the victim had been stabbed multiple times and [was] lying on the ground,” and to “cleaning the murder location to remove blood stains and conceal the crime while the victim lay dying for approximately 30 minutes,” according to the affidavit.
