Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour got a new wing today, May 5, 2014 in her honor at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The newly-refurbished $40 million Anna Wintour Costume Center Grand Opening at the Met was also well-attended by several fashion industry luminaries and A-listers.
Ribbon-cutting was done by none other than FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) Michelle Obama, wearing a green and white embroidered dress by Indian-born American designer Naeem Khan. She explained, “I’m here today because of Anna.”
Obama added, “This is for anyone curious about fashion,” referencing students from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and the High School for Fashion Industries. “Fashion is a business and an art. You're here because we want you to dream bigger.”
Aerin Lauder, the Founder and Creative Director of AERIN, was among those who spoke onstage as well as the Met’s President Emily K. Rafferty and Art Director Thomas P. Campbell.
The grand opening was well attended by several fashion designers including Calvin Klein and Calvin Klein Collection Creative Director Francisco Costa, Ralph Lauren (loved the elegant navy pinstriped suit on RL!), Marc Jacobs (notice the “white side walls” of his haircut, also known as an “undercut” these days? Sexy!), Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera (amazing pearls!), Tory Burch, Oscar de la Renta (also in a lovely pinstriped suit), Michael Kors (another sharp haircut!), Stella McCartney (adored the oversized black and white polka dots!), Vera Wang, Zac Posen, Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria Beckham, Donatella Versace, photographer Mario Testino as well as Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa.
Actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, and the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, too mixed it up with fashion industry luminaries for the historical occasion.
Wintour’s 26-year-old daughter, Bee Shaffer, who was attending the opening, posted a picture to Instagram showing the new wing of the museum, adding “Now she’s a museum!? This is a lot to live up to.” She’s right!
