After strong holiday and winter collections, Ann Taylor's new spring collection, arriving in stores yesterday, fails to dazzle.
I have been an Ann Taylor shopper for many years. They offer affordable fashions for just about every occasion. The Holiday collection was one of the best ever, with rich fabrics and fashion forward styling.
(Fourth quarter earnings were up 3% over last years, and reached $623 million, up from $608 million.)
The spring 2014 collection, however, seems to be a conglomeration of looks from previous seasons with no real “New” looks.
A leather mini in cognac (the leather Metro Skirt) is offered at $198, it is really just a remake of the faux leather mini from the winter collection now on clearance for about $50.
A new arrival, is the color blocked skirt in foggy morning and black ($89),which definitively has the same look as the color block skirt in pale camel and black on clearance (approx. $40).
A leather moto jacket, again, very similar to the winter faux leather jacket.
The collection lacks color, with most items in tan and black. Color blocked dresses in tan and black are also reminiscent of the winter collection .
The collegiate collection of fall 2013 seems to also be an inspiration with The Tweed Sky Jacket priced at $159.
On a positive note, Ann Taylor's denim collection is offered in a variety of fits and cuts this season. The slim ankle jean is one of the best fitting jeans I have tried. Currently on special, priced at $49.50, it is worth stocking up and trying a few styles.
Overall, unimpressive. Looking forward to color and style from the summer collection.
