Ann Arbor Science & Skeptics contribute to astronomy podcast

Ann Arbor Science & Skeptics, a local group focused on science and critical thinking, recently contributed to the popular astronomy podcast 365 Days of Astronomy.

The podcast, which aired Feb 22nd, is of Chris Lindsay interviewing Dr. George Gloeckler.  Gloeckler is a physics research professor at the University of Michigan who studies interstellar medium, in particular the heliosheath, and has contributed to two space probes – Ulysses and IBEX.  The interview focuses on why Dr. Gloeckler’s area of astronomy is important and how it’s being done.  You can listen to the interview here online, or subscribe to the podcast through iTunes.

Lindsay, one of the organizers of the Ann Arbor Science & Skeptics, is no stranger to interviewing scientists. He hosts the podcast Critical Wit, which covers topics from science to literature to music, and the group regularly asks questions of local scientists during their monthly meetings in Ann Arbor.  After reading a Nature article on IBEX earlier this month, Lindsay decided to contact Gloeckler for an interview.

Believing that other people would also be interested in what Gloeckler had to say, Lindsay submitted the interview to 365 Days of Astronomy. The podcast was started as part of the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, but continues to provide daily astronomy podcasts over three years later.  365 Days of Astronomy however, has a time limit of 5-10 minutes, forcing Lindsay to “cut to the chase” and only feature a part of the conversation he had with Gloeckler.  Lindsay says he’ll most likely turn the full interview into an episode for Critical Wit.

This is Lindsay’s fourth contribution to the podcast, and he hopes to provide more interviews in the future as he likes doing them.

Ann Arbor Science & Skeptics meet twice a month, once to converse with and have questions answered by a guest expert and a second time to socialize. Group events, as well as other science activities in Ann Arbor, can be found on their website’s calendar
