Animated 3D film 'Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return' slated for 2014 release

If you thought the trips to Oz were over, think again. Variety has exclusively learned that the 3D animated musical titled "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" is slated to be released in 2014 by Summertime and Clarius Entertainment with Bryan Adams contributing original songs to the film's soundtrack.

"Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" will be the third movie musical based on Baum's and great-grandson, Roger Stanton Baum's subsequent stories about the Land of Oz. It is the only animated "Oz" film to date and will be voiced by Lea Michele (Dorothy), Jim Belushi (Lion), Dan Aykroyd (Scarecrow), Kelsey Grammer (Tin Man), and Bernadette Peters (Glinda). Patrick Stewart, Hugh Dancy, and Martin Short also join the cast as new characters to the film.

Frank L. Baum's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" has been the driving force behind movies such as "The Wizard of Oz", "The Wiz", and "Oz the Great and Powerful". Even the Broadway musical "Wicked" is based in the Land of Oz and is the only one centered around the Wicked Witch's background and story.

It will be the first movie to take place in Oz that will not include the Wicked Witch of the West since it brings Dorothy back to the Land of Oz after the events of "The Wizard of Oz" have taken place.
