Why spend money on needless gifts when you can support animals in need?
With the holiday season fast approaching, it is easy to become swept up in the hullabaloo that is the commercialization of Christmas (and Chanukah or Kwanzaa). Rather than purchase a toy that Junior will never touch again, buy Aunt Sally that too-tight sweater for the umpteenth time, or buy Dad that exorbitant electronic item, consider giving a non-traditional gift: the gift of a charitable donation. Fortunately, there are countless worthy organizations within the Kansas City area. Here are just a couple of worthy charities to cater to the fur-lovers in your family.
Wayside Waifs is one of the most well-known animal welfare agencies in the area. The goal of this no-kill shelter and animal education center is committed to the betterment of companion animals. As stated on their website their purpose is to, "place adoptable companion animals in responsible homes." In giving to this organization, not only would your holiday list diminish, but one animal (or more!) would be given the opportunity to find their new family.
Yet another organization within this community that serves companion animals and their people is the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC). Created in 1912, HSGKC has the same mission as Wayside Waifs, but approaches it differently; as Robin Rowland of HSGKC states, "We were the first local humane society to become a no kill shelter, the first local humane society to offer low-cost spay/neuter, the first local humane society to offer preventative vet care to low-income pet owners and now we are the first local humane society in the area to create the first no kill county in the metro area." Not only does this organization offer services to better the lives of animals, but also provides services for their owners. In such difficult economic times, enabling one owner to continue to care for their pet (as the HSGKC does) is one of the greatest gifts to be given.
With such compelling reasons for supporting such worthy causes, consider giving to an animal welfare organization this holiday season: it is truly the gift that will keep giving.
