Animal welfare organizations benefit from Margie Yee Webb's 'Cat Mulan'

Who knew that adopting an underweight kitten could lead to a new occupation? For Margie Yee Webb, the action inspired her to create a gift book that not only delights, but benefits other animals as well.

Webb’s hobby of photography came in handy when she adopted Mulan from City of Sacramento Animal Care Services in 2004. The kitten demonstrated remarkable personality in spite of her rocky beginnings. As Mulan grew and thrived, Webb built up an impressive collection of photos of the cat doing all sorts of charming things. The photos led to philosophical interpretations and Webb’s first book was born.

“Cat Mulan’s Mindful Musings: Insight and Inspiration for a Wonderful Life” combines engaging images with appropriate insightful phrases. Webb held a book launch party at Rancho Cordova’s The Marketplace mall in March of 2011.

For the kick-off event, Webb invited four animal welfare organizations: Animal Rescue of California, FieldHaven Feline Rescue, PAWED (People for Animal Welfare in El Dorado County) and the Sacramento SPCA. All four benefited from the funds raised there by gift basket drawings and donation collections, in addition to the portion of the proceeds from the book sales. The organizations brought adoptable animals to display, as well. Since then, even more animal organizations have received help from Webb and Mulan.

Webb's giving spirit doesn’t end with animals. She is a past president of the California Writers Club–Sacramento Branch (2007-2011). She also belongs to the Northern California Publishers & Authors and the Women’s National Book Association–San Francisco Chapter. As part of CWC-SB she helps with a series of writer’s workshops. She also supports her fellow writers by volunteering at conferences such as the San Francisco Writers Conference and the Left Coast Crime Conference.

All of this comes from a woman who didn’t aspire to be a writer until a tiger-striped kitten entered her life and pointed the way!
