Animal shelter surveillance captures woman punching dog

According to Wednesday's WTVR News, officials in Colonial Heights, Va., are hoping that someone will help identify a woman who allegedly punched a dog who was in an SUV, outside of an animal shelter on Monday night.

The Colonial Heights Animal Shelter surveillance cameras captured the disturbing scene which took place under cover of darkness just outside the facility's doors.

On April 2, the shelter went to Facebook with a plea for help:

We need your help to identify this person. On 3-31-14 someone dropped off 5 fish tanks full of fish at our shelter. She also punched a dog that was in her vehicle. The vehicle appears to be a newer model Ford Explorer silver or grey in color.

The person appears to a black female 25-35 years old. Her hair is braided in rows. The dog in the video is a German Shepherd. Please contact us if you can help us identify this person. The dog in the video will very much appreciate you help.

The facility posted an update on Thursday:

Regarding our surveillance video, please only call the shelter with tips if you recognize the person seen. All other calls are still accepted but our phone line is being flooded and staff are having to take time off from taking care of the animals here to take a lot of calls. ****ALL FISH ARE SAFE IN NEW HOMES*** Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Anyone with information about the woman who is in the video is asked to phone Master Officer Arehart at 804-520-9397...the woman will be facing charges of trespassing and animal cruelty when and if she is identified.
