HYDEN, Kentucky - Animal advocacy organization Global Conservation Group and others are outraged over an event that took place on April 12 in Leslie County. The event, known as the "Coon on a log" race involved a wild caged raccoon that was pulled across bodies of water while large hunting dogs try and kill the animals.

Despite being hosted and sponsored by the Leslie County Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Paul Howard, the illegal event took place as planned.

A representative from the animal rights group said in a press release "We have filed two complaints with federal agencies and five complaints with state agencies against the Leslie County Sheriff's Office for violating public safety and captive wildlife regulations".

Agencies that the Global Conservation Group filed complaints with include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Leslie County Health Department, Cabinet of Health and Family Services, Kentucky Department of Public Health, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture.
