Shelter pets and rescue animals are getting a big boost of recognition from the United States Postal Service (USPS). On April 30, 2010, the USPS will be issuing this year's social awareness stamp series: “Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet.”

“These stamps continue a 50-year Postal Service tradition of bringing attention to serious social issues of the day … one letter at a time,” said Postmaster General John E. Potter in a statement. “Our goal is to increase public awareness of the number of sheltered pets in this country, to encourage pet adoption and to promote humane and responsible pet care.”

Hooray!

Holistic pet care company, Halo Purely for Pets, will be working with the USPS in promoting the new stamps. Ellen DeGeneres is a co-owner of Halo.

"Pet adoption is something I'm extremely passionate about,” said DeGeneres in a press release. “I believe that by working together, we can find good homes for the millions of homeless and abandoned pets out there. And until they get adopted, I'm happy to say that Halo and I are giving one million meals to shelter pets that are waiting for you."

Halo will be working with Freekibble.com to feed 1 million homeless dogs and cats via a social media campaign. For example, the company will donate one meal for every person that signs up to follow Halo or Freekibble on Facebook and Twitter. (Go to www.halopets.com/help to learn more.)

    Oh what a lovely idea!

Oh this is just great. I will be purchasing them.

I hope these are 'forever' stamps, so they'll be around and available for a long time. Education is key to US finally ending the killings in shelters, while others breed.

Geez, I should have looked before posting, cause unfortunately the stamps are for 44 cents - which means they won't be around long, according to the regular USPS price increases lately!

I was happy to know these special stamps cost the same as all others. I pre ordered a few booklets this morning. It's ok w/me if their the 44 cent not the forever stamps. I'll just simply purchase the 1 cent stamp or whatever the postal service may increase postage to later on. No big deal. I'm helping to spread adopting rather than buying animal companion's. And that's what matters to me.:)

I do wish the postal service would stop increasing the price of stamps though.

I am ready to buy more than one of course, I love this idea

I've bought several of these booklets since. I like how each stamp says Animal Rescue. Found out recently the prices of postal stamps will go up 2 cents in Jan. No prob. I'll just add the 2 cent stamps when the time comes to keep using my adopt a shelter pet stamps.
