Animal rescue group gives free doghouses to icy pups in Northeast

With frigid weather whipping across the Northeastern portion of the United States in the first two weeks of December, outdoor dogs may face serious health risks. Dogs living outside in sub-zero temperature conditions are extra susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite. Pets with special health needs may face additional risks.

Responding to this concern, Guardians of Rescue is now delivering free insulated doghouses to animals in need in many locations from New Jersey to Maine.

“The cold weather is extremely bad for a dog’s health and can lead to sickness, or even death,” Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of Rescue, in a December 16 announcement. “We’re distsributing insulated doghouses throughout the Northeast for protection [of outside dogs] from the freezing weather.”

Al Erdmann and Patricia Ann Erdmann Ewald, both of Queens, New York, constructed the canine shelters for the Smithfield, New York-based animal rescue organization.

“We don’t recommend keeping any pet outside for long periods of time,” said an official statement from the American Veterinary Medical Organization. “But if you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide him/her with a warm, solid shelter against wind.”

“With the help of the public we are making a difference one dog house at a time by providing refuge to those animals in need so they are protected from the elements,” added Dori Scofield, Guardians of Rescue vice president.

In the Northeast US, individuals may report dogs left outside to Guardians of Rescue to request free doghouses, while supplies last.
