Recently there was a dog 'rescued' from the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys California. The Rescue who pulled the dog was Muttshack Animal Rescue.

Muttshack is run by Amanda St. John. They have a permanent adoption event location at Pet Co a store in Burbank, California. Puppy adoption in a store environment may cause people to consider taking home a puppy with the same mindset of bringing home the cat litter. Extra vigilance should be given to what the possible adopters idea is of a "life long commitment". .

This is what happened, this is what they did ...

Mid-january 2014

Muttshack pulled Sasha, who was listed as a pure breed Visla dog. They pulled Sasha from the East Valley Animal Shelter, A high kill facility under Los Angeles city's jurisdiction.

Muttshack then adopted out Sasha to a family, that to my knowledge had at least one known child. (Nothing wrong there, I believe children should grow up around dogs)

At some point Sasha nipped the child. ( the child could have provoked or it could have been a unprovoked incident, either situation should not have affected the rescues response.)

The adopters contacted Muttshack to return Sasha and asked if they could be refunded the adoption fee. Muttshack refused to refund the fee ( that isn't the issue)

The following are accounts from the Adopter , shelter staff , and a rescuer who happened to be at the shelter when Sasha was returned..

Muttshack told the adopter that they do not take back in troubled dogs and that if they didn't want Sasha, that they would have to bring her back it to the shelter.

East valley shelter contacted Muttshack to redeem Sasha . Muttshack refused.

The rescuer/trainer who witnessed Sasha being brought back to the shelter told the adopter to ask for any pledge money donated to go towards training, and offered to help for less then half a normal training rate. muttshack either refused or the didn't contact back.

Either way .. Sasha was dumped by the rescue.

They not only couldn't have cared less that the animal they "rescued" only days before and then placed into a home that turned into a bad situation. Knowing that this could lead to her being isolated, kept out side, or even treated wrongly meant nothing to Muttshack.. They even encouraged the decision to put the animal's life in urgent danger by making the adopter bring Sasha to the same shelter Muttshack pulled her from.

To quote the high school me , "dude, that's cold and scandalous"

Now to quote the animal rescuer and advocate in me, "muttshack's actions should not go ignored. They should be held accountable. "

If you ask me , and you should... independent , group, non profit or not for profit rescuers or rescues should consider the act of rescuing an animal to be equal to that of making a promise. A promise that you will find them a loving home no matter how long it takes. If that loving home ever lets them down, it is also the promise that you , the rescuer. .. never will. Your job as a rescue is to care not be careless.

And last but most importantly ...

Sasha now sits waiting for a real rescue or adopter to save her.
