Animal Magnetism: Dogs Poop North-South

Maybe there's a reason your pup has to find just the right spot...even in this weather.

On January 2, 2014, Discover magazine published an earth-shattering article detailing that, when the earth's magnetic field is calm, dogs line their business up on a north-south axis. In the article authored by Breanna Draxler, Dogs Align Themselves to Earth’s Magnetic Field When Pooping, researchers reported that when the earth's magnetism was stable, the dogs preferred to salute while facing north or south. But when the sun’s magnetic field and solar winds tweak the earth's magnetic field orientation, the 70 test pups were much less particular.

Hmmm. Maybe that explains why my Milton has to go around in circles before landing on just the right spot...no matter how darned cold it is.
