Aug 23 2013 - The Montreal Vegan Rejects will be holding a gathering at Place Émilie-Gamelin (known informally as Berri Square). on Aug 24, 2013 from 1pm-4pm. According to a press release, the event called “Animal Liberation Demonstration” is being held in solidarity with activists in Israel, and across the world, thousands are expected to march in animal liberation solidarity demonstrations all on the same day. The demonstration will highlight the cruelty and suffering of animals in the name of food, clothing, entertainment, research, and companion animals.
The principles of the demonstration are:
- We are all Earthlings
- Animals can feel suffering as much as humans
- The use of animals as commodities has resulted in their exploitation and violence
Michaela Johnson, founder of the group, explains that during the event, monitors will be set up to play videos such as “Earthlings” and “The Animals Film” , to reveal the reality of suffering within factory and facility walls. Volunteers will be handing out pamphlets to provide further information about the cruelty animals suffer on a daily basis and about the environmental and health benefits of a plant-based diet.
“There will be live musicians including vegan performer Marc-Joseph Chalfoun, a local musician combining sacred chants and peace songs. Comedian Mike Meo will also entertain us with his humor as a way to inform others about a vegan lifestyle” said Michaela. “This event is for people who are passionate about spreading a message of compassion, as well as for those who are curious about the vegan lifestyle and the truth about animal cruelty. Be informed. Be a voice for the voiceless”
“Veganism”, according to local activist, Joanne Beauchemin from Respect Animal, “is the only way to stop participating in animal abuse in every way, right here, right now, without waiting for anyone else to make a "move".” This demonstration is a way to educate people and let them know that such a possibility exists. In fact, according to a report from the United Nations Environmental Program, a “global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty, and the worse impacts of climate change.” (The Guardian.com -June 2, 2010)
