Sunday , August 22 is not a usual day to pick up bread at the Great Harvest Bread Company .But if you stop by , you are in for a real treat. The store is ushering in it's 4th Annual Animal Kneads Day Fundraiser to provide free Spay and Neuter services to Mecklenburg County dogs and cats.
The store isn't usually open on Sunday , but from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm this Sunday, volunteers from Animal Care and Control will staff the counters and provide help to the bakers. They will be bagging up some delicous bread for anyone who comes by and is willing to donate just $10.00 for a loaf. That ten bucks doesn't just buy you a loaf of bread, it could help spay a female dog or cat and help put a dent in the pet over population which is causing too many animals to be euthanized in our local shelters.
Just last year Mecklenburg County euthanized nearly 12,000 dogs and cats and many were highly adoptable. With help from this fundraiser monies could go to cutting that dismal figure.
According to Animal Control, " Charlotte-Mecklenburg is one of the top 10 fastest-growing US metro areas, and as the Charlotte area continues to grow, so does its animal population. There are an estimated 400,000 cats and dogs living in the metro area, and many of these animals are stray. " That is a staggering number of animals that need to be cared for including costly spay and neutering.
There will be lots to keep you busy too as you munch on that tasty loaf. The fund raiser will include entertainment from local radio stations, informational booths, and of course several rescue groups will be on hand to show some off and hopefully place some of their adoptable animals
Last year the fundraising goal for the Animal Kneads Fundraiser was $7500. This year the goal is $10.000. Take a moment and go by the Great Harvest Bread Company. It is located at 6420 Rhea Road , in the Shops at Piper Glen, and be a part of making a difference.
