When Ronny Kleyweg, owner of Animal House, a new and vintage clothing store in Venice, Ca., opened his store in the 1980s, vintage clothing hadn't yet found its niche in the clothing market, which made Animal House a hot spot amongst locals. Overtime, as vintage apparel's popularity started to gain a following, Kleyweg began incorporating new designer items to his inventory as well, making sure to always stay ahead of the local fashion game.

“Back then no one really had stuff like Diesel, and Juicy Couture,” Kleyweg said. “That stuff doesn't sell anymore, so the new brands we carry now are [designers like] Joe's Jeans, and Ella Moss.”

Kleyweg hand picks every piece in the store, and says that although he gets customers that range in age from their early 20s to mid-50s, from skater types to movie stylists, Kleyweg's largest customer base comes from Japan.

“They buy American vintage and take it back to Japan with them and sell it in their shops,” Kleyweg said. “It does put a dent in our inventory, but they're buying stuff that the Americans here aren't going to buy.”

Animal House carries men's and women's clothing, with a small selection of children's pieces. Women's clothing includes long dresses, and oversized tops, easy layering pieces, tank tops and dozens of scarves to chose from ranging in price from $2 to $18. The store also carries books on fashion, design, surf and skate, and has a small selection of Emilio Pucci bags, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton.

“There is something here for everybody,” Kleyweg said. “This is stuff that people can afford, and it's stylish, not like the stuff you'd find at a thrift store.”

Currently, Kleyweg said his hottest-selling women's items are the 1970s India gauze hippie dresses and blouses he has in the store.

Animal House is located on 66 Windward Ave. in Venice. The store is open seven days a week from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Call 310-392-5411, or visit for more information.
