Animal ethics, medical industry

The medical industries depend on laboratory animals for research and understanding of diseases and disorders. They are credited with saving many human and animal lives because of medical and veterinary breakthroughs resulting in this research.

Diseases once deadly are now controllable with vaccines developed by animal testing. Polio, small pox and tuberculosis are almost non-existent. Veterinary research has found a vaccine for distemper.

Rats and mice are the most used in experimentation. They are specifically bred and closely relate to humans when exposed to diseases such as cancer. Farm animals like sheep are used to learn about osteoarthritis and other human joint related maladies. Insects are also used in studies. Fruit flies are key to genetic research. Horses have long been essential in the development of anti-venom vaccines to counter act the reactions to snake bite poisons. Other animals used are dogs, cats and worms. The Medical College of Wisconsin supports research using both land and water animals.

Ethical guidelines are used by most laboratories called the “3Rs.” For more than fifty years this rule has been followed by scientists. They refine their research to reduce stress to the animal as much as possible. They reduce the number animals required in experimentation. They replacement animal studies with other means whenever possible.

Milwaukeeans and their pet use products that are safe, cured of diseases and injuries resulting in research and studies using animals.
