Animal care employee fired for caring too much?

Manhattan, NY - An employee fired for going above and beyond? For caring too much? It doesn't seem logical and it doesn't make sense, but that seems to be what has happened for an employee of the New Hope program at the Animal Care and Control facility in Manhattan.

The former employee's name is Emily Tanen and she was highly regarded by those that had the privilege of working with her and seeing her accomplishments first hand.

Emily took it upon herself to photograph all of the dogs at the shelter facility - she had a special knack for capturing the inner beauty of her subjects.

Because of her touching, soulful photos, many otherwise "hard to place" or even "unadoptable" dogs were rescued.

But apparently, her beautiful photos of homeless dogs included something that the "powers that be" of the NY Animal Care and Control did not want - photos of dogs receiving human contact.

Her amazing images were often the difference between life and death - for dogs that have no ability to speak on their own behalf, the touching photos were frequently the key to a life-saving rescue....

Images that touched the heart - images that elicited enough feeling from those that viewed them that a life could literally be saved.

But now she is gone from the facility - a powerful advocate for the voiceless animals is no longer there to help.

Drab, dreary, emotionless photos are all that will remain.

Thousands are outraged - a petition for Emily's reinstatement has even been started.

At the New Hope website, their own words indicate the following:

The New Hope program is AC&C’s proactive community initiative aimed at finding homes for New York City’s unwanted pet population.

A proactive community initiative - seemingly a program that strives to go above and beyond - something that seems absolutely contrary to the reasoning behind the firing of Emily Tanen.

Individuals that worked closely with Tanen fear that the thousands of dogs that enter this facility will suffer with her loss...without her special touch and willingness and ability to go above and beyond, more dogs will die.

If you would like to take part in bringing this situation to the attention of officials in the area, please do one or all of the following:

Let those in positions of authority know that you have concern for the welfare of the animals that are housed at this facility.
