Scott Heiser, Director of Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) Criminal Justice Program, will present the different scenarios and issues that prosecutors confront when litigating animal cruelty cases motivated by domestic violence. It will take place Feb 27,2013, at the Chancellor Day Hall at McGill University. This is will be happening 2 days after the end of ALDF’s fifth annual National Justice for Animals Week.
Scott Heiser, has been a prosecutor for 17 years and he worked as elected District Attorney in Benton County in Oregon for eight years. He is now senior staff attorney for the Criminal Justice Program at the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). According to the site of the Berkeley Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, the program assists with free legal services for prosecutors and law enforcement agencies. They do this in order to ensure that state criminal anti-cruelty statutes are enforced and that those convicted of animal cruelty and neglect receive appropriate sentences.
The McGill’s Student Animal Legal Defense Fund in collaboration with The Sexual Assault Law Club are sponsoring this presentation.
