Over the weekend thousands of Animal Activists discovered they had been the target of a hacker and their email accounts had been compromised.
Last year email hacking was at an all-time high with over a half-a-million reported attacks. Targeting the Animal Activist could raise last year’s figures and compromise millions of email accounts.
No person or group has come forward to accept responsibility for these attacks.
According to R. Cheng who writes for the Pit blog, “Having your email hacked is a very dangerous situation. The reason is that your email is essentially the hub for everything you do online. Your bank account, your Amazon account, and so on. When you forget your password, where do they send it? They send it to your email account. So now that the hacker has access to your email, they now have access to a lot more, and perhaps your entire life.”
Yahoo states, “If your email account's password has been compromised, the fastest (and easiest) way to stop this, is to replace it with a new, strong password which will be more difficult for hackers to guess.”
“While changing your password will resolve most issues, it is important to check that your account's alternate email address has not been modified. If it has been, the party responsible may be able to regain access to your account.”
“But unfortunately, your work is not done. If the hacker knows your email password, you probably are using that same password for many other places too. You need to go and change your passwords on all of those other accounts as well. Cheng continued.
“After you are sure that you have changed all your passwords, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Having your email hacked is a horrible feeling, but if you act quickly by changing your passwords, you can minimize the impact to a little embarrassment to your email contacts.” Cheng ended.
