A very popular aged rum that traces its origin back to World War I, Angostura's award-winning 1919 brand offers full flavor for rum cocktails at an affordable price.
Angostura 1919 rum possesses a rich, golden-amber hue with excellent clarity made from a blend of light and heavy molasses-based rums aged for a minimum of 8 years in charred American oak bourbon barrels. The rum exudes a complex bouquet brimming over with aromas of bright vanilla, burnt sugar, subtle cocoa, rich molasses and creamy caramel.
It is remarkably soft and well rounded as the rum glides over the palate without a hint of harshness or biting edge. Within moments it opens up, revealing a generous and long-lasting array of toasty flavors. The finish is warm and very relaxing.
The legend professes that soldiers from Trinidad in WWI were sent "care packages" of local rum to lift their spirits, earning it a world-wide reputation for smooth flavor, while ensuring that every company wanted a guy from Trinidad in their ranks.
Angostura is world famous for bitters, a secret formula developed by Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert dating back to 1824, originally created as a digestive aid for soldiers in the Brazilian jungle. The town of Angostura on the banks of the Orinoco River was an important trading post. The bitters were first exported to Europe in 1830.
It is said to be the largest distillery in the British West Indies producing in excess of 15 million gallons of alcohol each year, bottling 600,000 cases of rum annually through its production company, Trinidad Distillers Limited. Their facility in Laventille, Trinidad features a French designed still made by Savalle. There are 6 aging warehouses with a total capacity of 80,000 casks.
