Angie Martinez resigns from HOT 97, and finds new home

HOT 97 is feeling a void as one of its most beloved personalities, and one of the most recognizable voices in radio has stepped down. Just yesterday on Jun 18, 2014, Angie “The Voice of New York” Martinez ended nearly two decades with the station, her afternoon radio show has consistently been ranked #1 with more young listeners than any other radio program in the country.

Ms. Martinez announced her resignation via Instagram as she stating that saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but expressing that she was extremely excited about the future. She then thanked HOT 97 and her fan for her unimaginable journey.

Martinez got her first break in radio at the age of 16 answering hot lines in the Promotions Department for HOT 97. There she met DJ Funkmaster Flex, and while working with him, she picked up on the craft of running a successful radio program. She then earned a spot hosting the Afternoon Drive weekdays, alongside DJ Enuff, where she interviewed the biggest names in music.

In 1997, Martinez flexed her hip hop skills after being encouraged by hip hop pioneer, KRS-One. Soon after she appeared track "Heartbeat" the same year. After the song gained a strong fan following, Lil' Kim, offered her a spot on the remix for her song "Not Tonight” The massive hit also featured guest appearances from Hip hop’s elite: Missy Elliott, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Da Brat. The single went on to become one of the most successful singles of 1997, by going platinum, and being nominated for two Grammy Awards that year.

Despite her successful guest apearance on Lil Kim's hit, it was 2002's Animal House that gave Martinez her first taste of hip hop stardom. Led by the hit single, “If I Could Go”, which also featured rapper Sacario and singer Lil' Mo, Animal House received much acclaim as "If I Could Go" became a huge crossover hit on pop radio, appearing on Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Animal House then entered the Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart and the Billboard Hot Hip-Hop / R&B Charts selling 92,000 units in its first week.

As of June19, 2014 Martinez has joined New York's Power 105.1 and Miami's The Beat. Best of luck to Ms. Martinez in her new endeavors. She is a true pioneer, and has proven that all is possible through hard work and dedication.
