Mark Nicola started Angelo's Pizza in 2005. Last year, Nicola closed all but his 1310 Grand Avenue West Des Moines location, then moved the business to 1238 Eighth Street in West Des Moines and merged the business with the occupant at the time, Jimmy's on 8th. Nicola sold the business and his recipes to Jimmy's owner Steve Kroner, but Nicola and his wife stayed on managers at what was then dubbed Angelo's on 8th. Earlier this month, Kroner sold majority ownership of Angelo's on 8th to Chad and Jennifer Kirschbaum of Pleasant Hill. The Nicolas were evidently not a part of the new owners plans, as they posted a farewell on the Angelo's on 8th Facebook page (which has since been deleted and replaced by a new Facebook page). No major changes to the restaurant and sports bar are planned.

The Iowa Restaurant Association's Mixology Championships will be held Wednesday night at Americana Restaurant & Lounge (1301 Locust Street in Des Moines) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event pits the top eleven "Mixologists" from across the state against each other with those in attendance and industry professionals serving as judges. Contestants, who went through a series of regional qualifiers to get to the championship, will use Pearl, Bacardi, and Jim Beam products (event sponsors) to mix up three drinks each. Those in attendance for the sold-out event will choose the "People's Choice" winner. Patrons will not only get to sample 24 cocktails of their choosing, but they will also get to nosh on hors d’oeuvres from Americana. For more information on the event, go to the Iowa Restaurant Association website.

Full Court Press (the owners of El Bait Shop, The Royal Mile, Hessen Haus, Mullets, Fong's Pizza, and other Des Moines restaurants and bars) have announced that they are in the planning stages to open The Iowan Craft Beer Hall, which will feature more than 75 Iowa craft beers on tap and offer mostly Iowa food products. FCP is still looking for a location in Downtown Des Moines to develop for the project.
