Angelina Jolie's public revelations about her double mastectomy with an interest in helping other women cope with the threat of breast cancer has helped portray what a courageous and beautiful woman she really is. Jolie is admired not just by her fans, but also by her physician, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter on Aug. 16, 2013.
Dr. Kristi Funk has said Jolie "waited to find the perfect timing in her personal and professional life, but, I think most importantly, in her soul" to reveal publicly what she'd done. In May people worldwide were shocked when Jolie revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy as a preventive measure.
Dr. Funk also said, "She is intensely private, but she calculated the moment when she would be ready to reveal something so personal." Jolie underwent the preventive double mastectomy because of her high risk of breast cancer. Dr. Funk of the Pink Lotus Breast Center in Beverly Hills, who treated 38-year-old Jolie, has spoken about the actress' brave journey in dealing with this surgery.
According to People Dr. Funk says Jolie's honesty about the surgery has helped raise awareness about breast cancer and the faulty gene, BRCA1 and BRCA2, which may cause it. Dr. Funk has also commented, "She knew always that in her philanthropic core she couldn't keep this a secret and be who she is." Dr. Funk is right about Jolie, who certainly is proving as usual to be an unusually brave and beautiful person right down to her soul.
