Actress Angela Bassett and singer-actress Mary J. Blige stopped by ABC’s “The View” on Monday to promote their new television movie “Betty & Coretta”. The biopic which is about the friendship that blossomed between iconic civil rights activists and widows Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King makes its world premiere on Lifetime Saturday February 2 at 8 p.m. ET.

Bassett along with Blige who also serves at the movie’s executive producer discussed what they learned about the women while filming the project.
“Number one, the friendship…I think that it’s amazing that their shared tragedy and the fact that they’re women and nurturing and mothers of children that they were able to, you know, bond”, said Bassett who plays the widow of Dr. King.
“I didn’t know that Betty was a professional dancer that she loved to dance. And I didn’t know that Coretta wanted to be an opera singer, that was new to me and I didn’t know that they were friends”, added Blige who portrays Malcolm X’s widow.

“Betty & Coretta” also stars legendary actress Ruby Dee, Malik Yoba as MLK and Lindsay Owen Pierre as Malcolm X.
