What is it?
Angel's Rest is the rocky bluff visible from I-84 near exit 28. The naked prominence is guarded by a small forest of snags leftover from a 1991 wildfire. Thanks in part to the fire; Angel's Rest offers visitors a whole lot in the way of varied landscape. The 5 mile, 1500 foot elevation gain out and back hike is a favorite among Portlanders looking for some Gorge exercise without spending hours in the car.
Why Visit?
The views from the top of Angel's Rest provide a unique perspective on the far west end of the Columbia River Gorge. The vistas stretch out west all the way back to downtown Portland and across the river to Cape Horn and the dual-summited Silver Star Mountain. Looking towards the east, hikers can see as far as Hamilton Mountain. In addition to the views, the proximity of the Angel's Rest summit to the water can give hikers the feeling of nearly hanging over the Columbia River.
Remnants of the wildfire that claimed the bluff in 1991 are still quite visible. Though the hike starts out in a typically lush Northwest-style forest, the trail soon passes through areas of burned out underbrush, flame licked trees, and almost completely fire-consumed snag laden rock gardens.
The trail is lovingly maintained and suitable for family outings as well as those looking for some legitimate exercise. Also, a series of interconnecting trails at the top of Angel's Rest gives hikers all the day hiking options they could hope for.
Get There:
Take I-84 east to Bridal Veil exit 28 and park at the large marked lot. If needed, overflow parking is available just up the road. From the trailhead across the street from the parking area, hike the 2.5 miles to the summit. Return the way you came.
