Angel Dog Rescue: Helping the helpless

If you are looking for a Valentine’s gift for a loved one who loves animals, think about making a donation to Angel Dog Rescue (ADR) in Georgetown, Georgia to help with the medical and boarding costs for Mindy – one of the many homeless dogs that ADR rescues each year. Here is Mindy’s story (from a recent email sent out by Susan Hayley, Director of ADR):

“Mindy was found in a ditch, freezing, starved, dehydrated and defeated. She was too weak to stand on her own. But she could lift her head and look at us with love and hope in her eyes. We didn't see any obvious injuries, but knew she might be injured.

We didn't think she would last through the night. Time was critical, so we took her to a vet clinic after hours, determined to save her life at all cost. The vet confirmed she was severely dehydrated, starved and anemic from parasite-infestation. She only weighed 22 pounds at intake - at least 15 pounds under weight. She had a low blood count and internal infection. And she has Heartworms, which cannot be treated in her current condition. Treatment was started immediately. Next day the vet said she was compliant, responsive to treatment and very sweet. She was already stronger and was expected to pull through!

Mindy is an 8 to 11 month old Pitbull mix. She has had all her vaccinations and preventions. She will be spayed and treated for Heartworm as soon as she is strong enough.

Mindy's rescue is a vivid example of what we do and the challenges we face. We rescue the most-in-danger, injured, sick, most helpless dogs and puppies. Their only chance is us. They come from roadsides, under sheds, in the woods. Sadly, there are so many that we cannot rescue them all. But when it is life-or-death, we admit them even when we have no foster space and no money. Often there are several life-or-death emergencies at once, as there have been this past week.”

ADR now faces another challenge with Mindy – where to put her now that she has been discharged by the vet. She needs an indoor foster because she is still bony and frail. Even though ADR is in Georgetown, Georgia (on the Georgia/Alabama border near Eufaula, Alabama), they are willing to send Mindy to a foster home outside of that area if necessary. Anyone who is interested in fostering Mindy or another dog or puppies can email Susan at sugull@bellsouth.net for more information. Put "Fostering" on the subject line. ADR has several other dogs who need fosters and there are dogs and puppies still out there we want to pick up as soon as fosters are available.
