When searching for appropriate places to send short fiction, poetry and artwork, large markets whose rates seem tantalizing are quite out of reach. Magazines that serve smaller crows and delivery anthological stories, articles, poetry and artwork are often nice places for beginning writer’s to see their names in print.
Andromeda Spaceways In-Flight Magazine
Based in Australia (and offering a special guideline bend for fellow Aussies and New Zealandites), Andromeda Spaceways—often referring to itself as ASIM—submits its issues for review by Asimov’s, Locus and other large-scale magazines ensuring the possibility for its writers’ notoriety to increase.
Fiction Submissions
ASIM very much enjoys speculative fiction and currently seeks short fiction by writers across the globe in the genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror. They limit submissions to 10,000 words in length, but Australian and New Zealand authors may submit works up to 20,000 words.
ASIM explains this strategy as a kind-hearted gesture for its brethren:
It costs a fortune for Aus & NZ authors to post a story that length to overseas markets - that’s why we bend the guidelines for them.
Andromedy Spaceways shies away from gruesome violence for violence’s sake or gratuitous sex scenes, asserting a wide-ranging audience; no submissions above a mature rating will be accepted. Furthermore, ASIM wants to stand out from the “dark-and-gritty” overtone that seems to permeate other magazines by receiving lighter pieces with focus on adventure over angst.
ASIM warns against over-dramatized angst:
We’re just not the best market for doom-laden go-nowhere stories which push the boundaries of the English language into new and unfortunate places.
Their “What we want (And don’t want)” page more specifically addresses things that make their editors groan and drop a story straight into the trash.
Poetry Submissions
So long as the submission does not exceed two pages, ASIM will consider any poetry, so long as its quality is sufficient.
The Submission Process
Submitting fiction to ASIM cannot be done through snail mail, which is surely excellent news. Submissions should be properly formatted according to ASIM’s guidelines and sent as an RTF attachment to asimsubmissions@gmail.com. This magazine does not accept the submission of more than one work at a time or simultaneous submissions of works to both their company and other companies. Upon submission, the author will receive a submission number with which to track their submission or submit queries.
Artwork Submissions
Though currently looking for black and white internal art pieces, ASIM takes its artwork seriously and enjoys letting its art editors get a little touchy-feely when it comes time to choose cover art. Using an online database of art samples and their accompanying artist’s brief information, editors can handpick an artist whose style conveys concepts relevant to the issue needing artwork. To submit sample artwork and be considered for cover art, supply one color painting. In order to submit internal artwork, a black and white piece can be submitted in tandem with the painting or alone. Submitting artwork works through a different system than fiction and poetry, thus one must contact ASIM’s art director at AsimArt2@gmail.com.
Payment
- fiction: $0.01 per word
- poetry: $10 per piece
- artwork: $100 per cover piece or $20 per black and white internal piece
Rights
ASIM will obtain two rights for the pieces that they accept: First Australian Serial Rights and limited electronic rights. Andromeda Spaceways In-Flight Magazine is a print magazine, but a digital copy is also paralleled on PDF.
