The Android Smartphone app called "Dog Wars" has been removed from the marketplace but the action may only be temporary.
The dog fighting app drew intense criticism from humane associations, including the Humane Society for the United States (HSUS) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The app was also condemned by police unions and it spurred a concentrated blogging campaign among the pet blogging community urging readers to sign a petition demanding that Google, the owner of Android, remove the app. Even Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who was convicted and imprisoned for dogfighting, has spoken out against the app.
Recent information indicates that Kage Games, the creators of the "Dog Wars" Android dog fighting app, have stated that the app was removed only to work on updates. Speculation is that the app will return to the marketplace. Google has yet to comment on the app.
Kage Games has also claimed the game was intended to educate gamers about the evils of dog fighting and animal cruelty. Given the nature of the app, which tells gamers to "Raise your dog to beat the best" and encourages them to "feed, water, train and fight dogs", the claim that the game is designed for educational purposes seems dubious, unless of course you are trying to teach people how to fight dogs!
For those of you who are opposed to allowing this app to continue (or resume) to be available, please sign the Change.org petition to tell Android to block the dog fighting app.
