Andrew Scott's first talk show appearance goes well until porridge gaffe

Andrew Scott made his first talk show appearance on RTE Ireland's 'The Late, Late Show' with Ryan Tubridy on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at 9:35 p.m. (IST – Irish Standard Time). The interview ran about 12 minutes. He was handsome, charming, funny, and with a poise not betraying the fact that he'd never done a talk show before. Not to mention, a LIVE talk show.

I feel somewhat responsible for one part of it. When I was doing research for this column back a couple of years ago I emailed a company called Flahavan's in Waterford, Ireland to ask them if they knew that (as my research had turned up) they had the first bit of film ever done with Andrew Scott who was currently on a hit BBC television show called 'Sherlock'. It turned out that they didn't realize he had done a commercial for them as a child because they hadn't kept the record of his name. Click here for the details from an article I wrote about it in Dec. 2012 called 'Andrew Scott as a child actor in an ad for Flahavan's porridge (oatmeal).' I never expected to see the ad anywhere since they asked me not to post it due to its poor image quality, so I posted only the print ad (which they said was ok) with my article. My email from Dolores Whelan of Flahavan's dated Aug. 2, 2012:

Hi Gail,

I’m sending through the ad Start the Day the Flahavan’s strictly for your viewing only. We do not want it reproduced, copied or uploaded for public use at this point in time. I’m attaching the actual pack which accompanied this ad which you can use . I think the boy in the ad could be Andrew.

Let me know how you go,

When 'The Late, Late Show' ran the commercial as a surprise for Andrew during his interview, I can only say that I screamed in utter surprise myself, "Oh my God!" loud enough to be heard in the next room. After the 12-second spot ended Andrew remarked to the host,

"My mum will be delighted to see that video because we don't have it in the house." Tubridy replied, "We'll sort something out!"

The interview went very well with Andrew answering a couple of stock questions about how he came up with his characterization of Moriarty, and the fan fervor for him and the show. Scott engendered audience laughter when he related a story about being given what he termed "short films" by a fan that showed him and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) in romantic situations made by using old love scene clips which had been smashed-up to make it look like the two men were actually in sexy clinches together.

The best part of the interview was Andrew's response when Tubridy ran the commercial he had done as a child. His happy memories of the filming, done in Inniskerry and Dublin, were evident in his smiling reaction. In the ad, he jogged around a neighborhood (fitness being one of the trends in the 80's) with his pretend dad, both wearing their matching track suits, which Flahavan's was offering as an inducement to buy their product. Apparently, it's a well-remembered commercial by those who were around in Ireland in the 1980's.

Afterward Andrew volunteered that, "I thought, 'what is this disgusting stuff, this porridge?!' I still hate porridge," to which Tubridy replied, "I wish you hadn't said that!" He then introduced John Flahavan, the owner of the company, who was seated in the audience, brought there by the show especially to present Andrew with the track suit he had worn in the ad. Shocked at the big reveal, Andrew immediately clapped his hands over his face in a - dare I say it - Moriartified reaction. It was easily the best bit of the interview. Scott handled the gaffe well. His unexpected faux pas made for good tv, which is all we ask, really. After Andrew was handed the darling little top half of the costume, he declared "I feel so guilty!" In an amusing coda to the incident, he proceeded to unconsciously fold the little jacket so neatly that even Tubridy mentioned it. Andrew's mom must've taught him well.

The interview is available to watch in the United States and probably everywhere else on RTE's iPlayer with no geographic restrictions. After the time period for iPlayer runs out it will be available through RTE'S Archive.

My thanks to Dolores Whelan of Flahavan's for her help checking out the commercial with me.
