Portland Trail Blazers point guard Andre Miller saw his consecutive games played streak end tonight in Portland's game against the Phoenix Suns. Miller was serving a one-game suspension for his actions in Portland's previous game.
Miller had played in 632 consecutive games, the longest active streak among NBA players.
The NBA suspended Miller for “making excessive and unnecessary contact” with Clippers rookie Blake Griffin in Portland's 100-91 win Sunday night.
Miller sprinted down the center of the court and ran over Griffin with about seven minutes remaining the fourth quarter, knocking him to the ground. Miller proclaimed after the game that his actions were a response to two pushes in the back that Griffin had committed earlier in the game.
Andre was not called for a foul on the play, but Stu Jackson, the NBA Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, reviewed the play and determined that Miller was guilty of poor behavior. That led to the one game suspension without pay.
The Blazers-Clippers game was one of the most physical games of the year, and it resulted in Clippers' forward Brian Cook receiving a two-game suspension after being called for a flagrant-2 foul against Portland center Joel Przybilla.
Miller will be back in uniform for the Trail Blazers when they take on the Orlando Magic Thursday in the Rose Garden.
The NBA record for consecutive games played is set at 1,192 by AC Green -- a record spanning November 19, 1986 to April 17, 2001. Interestingly enough, Green was born in Portland, Oregon and was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
