Anderson Silva on why he lost to Weidman

The much talked about rematch between Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman is just 23 days away. And while fans are certainly excited to see what happens next, many still question how “The Spider” approached the first fight between both men. Strange antics and showboating ultimate cost Silva his middleweight championship that night, but the Brazilian explained to MMA Fighting he now knows where he went wrong:

“My mistakes in that fight, and that’s the first time I’m saying this, were basic mistakes. I did everything I had to do except hit him. I didn’t counterattack. When I stopped with my feet parallel, I should have hit him and walked one step behind. I didn’t do that. I saw my mistakes and I’m working on that to train for this next fight.”

“It’s going to be a tough fight and it won’t last too long if it stays standing.”

Tough words from someone who got knocked out back in July. But a motivated Silva is likely a dangerous one. The Weidman loss was the first he’d suffered since 2006 when he was disqualified for hitting Yushin Okami with an illegal upkick. And to his point, not many are better on their feet than Silva.

The event goes down at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and is also highlighted by a co-main event between Ronda Rousey and Meisha Tate. Tickets can be purchased at UFC.com.
