Andaz offers guests two views of New York

While the raft of new boutique hotels that have popped up in Manhattan over the past few years all seem remarkably similar to each other, one brand stands out by differentiating its two properties in the city. Part of the mission for Andaz, a   Hyatt Hotels brand created in 2007, is to integrate the neighborhood into the hotel—and vice versa—and that’s what it has done with Andaz Wall Street and Andaz 5th Avenue.

As the only hotel literally on Wall Street, Andaz aims to offer a respite from the hectic pace just outside its doors. Guest rooms, typically 345 square feet or larger, have clean lines, ample lighting and high ceilings with furnishings in natural finishes such as veined stone, bamboo and oak. In a city where space is precious, Andaz Wall Street has nice touches like bay window seats and rotating wardrobe valets. Along with a fitness center and spa, guests on business may want to use the services of Andaz Studio, a collection of studio conference rooms surrounding one central kitchen.

The hotel’s restaurant, Wall & Water, has already become a hit with the Wall Street crowd, as a convenient breakfast meeting place and for its home-to-market menu of comfort foods with gourmet flair. Favorites include Mac & Cheese, Seafood Pot Pie and the W&W Burger, the classic served with rustic fries. A private dining room for up to 12 is available, as well as a chef’s table event.

Up on Fifth

A world away from bulls and bears—but only 15 minutes by subway—visitors to the city can experience life in their own loft-style apartment on Fifth Avenue. The Andaz 5th Avenue was designed by Tony Chi and inspired by the high-ceilings and solidity of the city’s pre-war apartments. Other design elements take their cue from such classic New York institutions as the New York Public Library (which is right across the street, by the way), Bryant Park and the Museum of Modern Art.

Seasonal and locally sourced are the watchwords at “the shop,” the hotel’s restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (with a small take-out coffee and sandwich area off the main dining room). At “the bar downstairs,” small groups gather at communal tables and share plates of farm-fresh food and bottles of fine wine. Here’s a tip: On winter nights, arrive early for a great table in front of the fireplace.
