The 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif on June 22, 2014. The category that stood out for web series fans was the Outstanding New Approaches – Drama Series. All but one of the nominees were web series newcomers to the Daytime Emmy Awards. It was an exciting time as the category approached and all of their series showed up on the big screen. … and the winner is: "Venice the Series" for the 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards Outstanding New Approaches – Drama Series.

Venice the Series,” was the veteran nominee in the category, and the show took home its second Emmy this year. In 2011, “Venice the Series,” became the first web series to win a Daytime Emmy Award. At that time it was nominated and won in the Outstanding Special Class Format category.

“Venice the Series” is executive produced by its star Crystal Chappell, co-executive produced by Christa Morris and Hillary B. Smith supervisor produces. Ms Chappell posted on her Facebook wall, “Special thanks to all of the fans, cast and crew who made this happen!”

“Venice” is the story of Gina, a gay designer. The series takes place in Venice, Calif. The story is based in part on a character from “Guiding Light,” a long running daytime soap opera that was taken off the air in 2009. Ms Chappell played Olivia Spencer in the soap opera. “Venice the Series” has been airing since 2009 and is one of the longest running web series on the Internet.

The ceremony, which was streamed live, was thrilling for all the nominees. There were parties before the ceremony, a red carpet affair, and after parties into the night. Many involved with the web series nominated shows were previously involved in soap operas. The ceremony and festivities were a chance to catch up with old friends and former colleagues. For others it was an opportunity to meet some of the daytime stars they grew up with and admired.

The day after the awards ceremony Michael Caruso, creator of nominated “DeVanity” summed up his feelings with a post on his Facebook wall. “...I just wanted to say thank you to all of our family, friends, and fans that were cheering us on and supporting us every step of the way. Humbled to be surrounded by such wonderful people. Going to the Emmys was an absolute treat, but having people like all of you support me is the thrill of a lifetime.”
