Wait...you know I only watch the Golden Globes for the gowns, right?

I'm happy to report, tonight's ceremony did not disappoint. I enjoyed the live blogging from the red carpet and the ceremony itself from Una Marche at the Huffington Post. I did some posting to Facebook with my comments on winners and losers. Happy to see trophies go to Paul Giamatti (Barney's Version), Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Melissa Leo (The Fighter) and Katie Segal (Sons of Anarchy).

Speaking of Melissa Leo, great gown, Melissa! A sparkling black sequined sheath. And Katie Segal looked stupendous in a  silk charmeuse draped gown in a daring color choice: bright tangerine!

There were a number of dresses along this orange theme, with Claire Danes in a deep salmon custom gown (she swore it was hot pink, but I didn't see it), and Lea Michele of Glee in a feminine salmon-peach ruffled gown by Oscar de la Renta. Emma Stone also wore a peach-colored streamlined dress by Calvin Kelin. Kyra Sedgwick looked fabulous in a ruffled chiffon gown by Emilio Pucci in a bright mango color. Anne Hathaway looked very glam in a backless long-sleeved gown by Giorgio Armani Prive, in a pale copper color that looked like very sexy armor, or maybe a tough-as-nails prom queen? Whatever, it was damn sexy.

There was plenty of black (including some dapper, unique looks on Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling), and grey (following the trend of the last two years, silver and grey have become increasingly popular). And after last year's pretty pale pink confections by Elie Saab (worn this year by Scarlett Johansson), pink was also a popular choice, most notably on Sandra Bullock in a pale pink chiffon gown by Jenny Packham with elaborate silver beading, and Best Actress in a Drama winner Natalie Portman in a lovely draped gown by Viktor & Rolf trimmed with a red sequined rose, flattering the pregnant actress beautifully. Julianna Marguiles wore a vintage YSL gown with pale pink skirt and black bodice that set off her flawless coloring perfectly.

But the most welcome color choice for this mid-winter awards show had to be deep green. Angelina Jolie wore a sparkling emerald green long sleeved gown by Atelier Versace, and Elisabeth Moss (who I'm sure many fans were rooting for, given her great work in Mad Men this season) wore a classy custom gown in drapey hunter green satin by Donna Karan. Mila Kunis looked scrumptious in a ruched emerald gown by Vera Wang. Catherine Zeta-Jones also looked stunning in a deep green strapless gown by Monique Lhuiller, on the arm of husband Michael Douglas who received a standing ovation when he got up to present the final award of the evening (he quipped about there being an easier way to get a standing ovation, referring to his recent bout with cancer). Amy Adams wore a deep teal gown by Marchesa, with a shoulder bow that resembled a number of other gowns with similar ornamentation (on Christina Hendricks, for example); such bows are considered haute couture but often look a bit silly at these events.

In Style tells us the top trends tonight were pink and green, as well as ruffles, "pale sparkle" and long sleeves. Nice to see my favorite colors getting some airtime!
